Description

A festive cake with red, white, and blue swirls, perfect for patriotic celebrations.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Red food coloring
  • Blue food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
  4. Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Divide batter into three bowls. Tint one bowl red, one bowl blue, and leave the third bowl white.
  6. Spoon dollops of each color randomly into the prepared pan.
  7. Swirl the colors together gently with a knife or skewer.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Adjust food coloring to achieve desired shade.
  • Do not overmix the batter after adding food coloring.
  • Cool completely before frosting (optional).
